Inis Oirthear

Mar a deir an t-ainm, Inis Oirthear, an t-oileán thoir is ciall leis an ainm. Tá sé ar an cheann thoir don line oileán atá ag sineadh ó Árainn Mhór soir go Toraí.

Oileán cumhan, fada thart fá mhíle ar fad agus ceathrú mile ar leithne atá in Inis Oirthear. Tá sé thart fá mhíle i bhfarraige amach ó chósta Ghaoth Dobhair.

Meastar gur le linn aimsir an ghorta a bhog bunús na ndaoine ón tírmór go dtí an t-oileán. Ag tús na ficheadh aois, bhí thart fá dhoiseán teaghlach ina gconaí ar an oileán agus bhí scaifte mór paistí i ngach teaghlach.

Cosiúil le oileáin eile thart ar chósta na hÉireann, thosaigh meath ag teacht ar dhaonra Inis Oirthear ins na caogadaí.

Tá cliú agus caill ar mhuintir Inis Oirthear mar iascairí, agus mar sheoltóirí.

Tá Coiste Forbartha bunaithe ag bunadh Inis Oirthear on bhliain 2007.

Inishirrer / The Eastern Island

It is as the name says, Island East, the eastern island.

It is the east island of a line of islands stretching from Aran More Island to Tory Island.

Inishirrer is a long, narrow island, about one mile long and one quarter of a mile wide.

It is approximately one mile off the coast of Gweedore.

It is estimated that during the famine times most people moved from the mainland (tírmór) to the island. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there were about twelve (dhoiseán) families living on the island and they had a large crowd of children in each family.

Like a lot of other islands around the coast of Ireland, population decline started in the fifties on Inishirrer.

The Inishirrer islanders are famous (cliú) for their expertise in sailing, rowing and fishing.

A Development Committee (Coiste Forbartha) was established on Inishirrer in 2007.

Chair: Tadhg Mac Conuladh

Secretary: Patrick McGarvey

The Committee is a member of Comharchumann na nOileán Beag (the Donegal Small Islands Co-operative), an umbrella group that was set up to develop the small islands in Donegal.
