Inishfree A Tribute To A Donegal Island And Its People by Margaret Duffy In 1963 Margaret, a city girl, married an islander Patsy Duffy. At the time on Inishfree there were around 50 inhabitants, a school and a post office. She and a little island boy, Black Joe, just 8½ years old, became inseparable friends. The mid 1970's saw the sad exodus of the Inishfree islanders to the mainland. Thirteen years ago Margaret returned. The island was silent and neglected. With the islanders gone, the vibrant traditional life-style of farming and fishing was also gone. But, the saddest loss of all was the islanders themselves. Through memories of the happy times shared with Black Joe, Margaret has recalled her own memories of the Islanders and their unique way-of-life. << BACK |
